Harrison's have over 40 years experience in manufacturing and installing flagpoles all over the world. We have put a simple 8 point buyer's guide to help you identify the type of flagpole you may require and what to look for when comparing products within the industry.

Harrison's strongly recommend you take the time to read through the points before you decide to buy to ensure 100% satisfaction.

EVEN IF YOU ONLY READ POINT 1 IT COULD SAVE YOU MONEY!

  1. How can I tell the difference between flagpoles when comparing prices? A flagpole is a flagpole isn't it?

That is the first common mistake people make when buying a flagpole. It is only after the initial purchase that problems can occur with foundations and the flagpole itself which can result in additional costs. It is essential you buy the correct flagpole for its purpose.

There are simple factors to consider when comparing prices from your supplier:

    1. Weight of the flagpole naked (without steel base weight)

The lighter the pole the weaker they will be and more likely to break. Harrison's 6 metre naked pole weighs 9kg - the heaviest in the industry

    2. Diameter of flagpole

The bigger the diameter of the pole the stronger it will be. Within the industry diameters of commercial flagpoles vary from 100mm flagpoles to the widest 120mm of the Harrison flagpole

    3. Thickness of flagpole

The thinner the wall thickness the weaker the flagpole will be. Harrison's wall thickness varies from 3mm (standard) to 7mm (extra Heavy Duty)

    4. Wind loading guarantees

One of the highest recorded gusts in the UK reached 110 mph. It is essential your flagpole can withstand high winds to avoid breakages and potential accidents occurring. Harrison's are the only manufacturer in the industry to offer guarantees upto 100mph. Other manufacturers only offer guarantees upto 30mph winds

    5. Warranty offered

Harrison's are the only supplier within the industry to offer a 10 year guarantee on our pole shafts. Other manufacturers only offer guarantees upto 1 year. We are confident in the strength and longevity of our poles.

    6. After Sales Support

Being a flagpoles manufacturer Harrison's provide the full service in house including initial design, supply, delivery, installation and maintenance. If you require any assistance pre or post purchase our experienced sales team will be happy to help.

  2. What size flagpole should you buy?

The most popular size flagpole in the UK is 6 metre in height. The required flag size needs to be considered when you are choosing the height of the flagpole also (see flag to flagpole conversion chart) If the flagpole is situated outside a building then the below table to should assist you with your decision:

    Size of Flagpole Storey Building
    6 metres 2
    8 - 10 metres 3
    12 metres + 4
  3. Is the flagpole for permanent or temporary use?

Harrison's provide many types of flagpoles which vary in quality and appearance. For permanent use the Commercial Range is ideal because poles have a traditional flagpole taper, are available in any height, have a 10 year warranty and can withstand wind speeds upto 100 mph. The car forecourt,residential/house builder range is more suited to semi permanent requirements, is available in 1 or 2 pieces and generally available in 4 metre, 6 metre or 8 metre heights.

  4. Where will you be installing the flagpole? On the Ground or mounted on a wall?

    1. Ground mounted

There are 2 popular types of bases you can choose from a) Hinged Base Plate or b) PVC Ground Tube.

Advantages of the hinged base plate are that the pole can be lowered by one person so they are easy to maintain. The ground tube option requires someone to physically bear hug the pole out of the ground.

    2. Wall Mounted

There are 2 main options to choose from when mounting flagpoles on a wall - a) Angled Wall Flagpole b) Vertical Wall Flagpole.

  5. What material should you buy?

There are 3 popular material choices for flagpoles in the UK

    • Glass Fibre
    • Aluminium
    • Stainless Steel

Harrison's always recommend fibre glass as it is more cost effective, more hard wearing and easier to maintain.

If Aluminium is preferred it is available in 3 finishes - powder coated, satin brush or anodized.

All stainless steel flagpoles are beautiful to look at and virtually maintenance free offering lifelong service and a sleek modern flagpole.

All Harrison flagpoles within the Commercial Range have a 10 year warranty (on the shaft only on wind speeds up to 100mph)

  6. What type of flag will be flown - landscape or portrait?

If you are flying a landscape flag, a rope and cleat flagpole is required and for a portrait flag a swivel arm flagpole is ideal.

  7. How do you protect and secure your flagpole?

If your flagpole is not in a secure location an internal halyard system (lockable door) is recommended. The door is located at the base of the pole and can be accessed with a key. To avoid interference with foundation bolts a ground collar can also be installed. If the flagpole is going to be installed in a public area, people climbing the flagpole can be a concern. The Hedgehog system was introduced by Harrison's to prevent this - please ask our sales team for further details.

  8. Do you require stronger flagpoles than the standard Commercial Range?

Although Harrison's commercial range is the strongest in Europe the standard poles may not be strong enough in certain situations i.e. if the flagpole is installed high on a roof of a building. It is essential that the appropriate flagpole is installed. Harrison's can provide heavy duty and extra heavy duty flagpoles in these circumstances.

The below table shows the differences in thickness between the standard, heavy duty and extra heavy duty flagpoles.

    6 metre 9/10 metre 12 metre
    Flagpole Type
    Standard 3mm 4mm 5mm
    Heavy Duty 4mm 5mm 6mm
    Extra Heavy Duty 5mm 6mm 7mm
