St George Flag

The Cross of St George or the St George's Cross Flag is a centred red cross on a white background. It was originally the flag of Geneo but was adopted by England in 1190 for use on ships entering the Mediterranean as this allowed English ships the protection of the powerful Genoese fleet.

The flag has been adopted as the national flag of England and Georgia but is also the provincial flag of Zaragoza, Huesca and Teruel. It is used by the cities of Barcelona, Montreal, Milan, Almeria, Genoa, Zadar and Padua as their municipal flag.

The St George’s flag is flown patriotically around the globe mainly at international football and rugby union competitions.

The flag of St George is also the rank flag of an Admiral in the Royal Navy, and civilian craft are forbidden to fly it.

Another use is by churches belonging to the Church of England who should fly the St George's cross, with the arms of the diocese in the left-hand upper corner of the flag.
