The flag of the Russian Federation actually pre-dates the old communist flag of the Soviet Union and is rumored to be inspired by the Dutch tricolour. There is no official explanation of the colours, but it does use the typical pan-Slavic hues of red, white and blue. It was brought back to modern use in 1991, following the fall of the Soviet Union.
It is now widely used on state buildings and gets more public outings on days like Russia Day (June 12th) and Victory Day (May 9th). The Russian flag also gets hoisted up the flagpole many times during the Olympics, such is Russian dominance in a range of sports.
