The Latvian flag regained it's use in 1990 following the Soviet collapse and its history dates the origins back centuries to an old military flag.

The red is said to stand for the blood spilt in defence of the country and the white to represent truth and honour.

Flag days are November 11th (Lāčplēsis Day), November 18th (Independence Day) and in mourning in memory of victims of the Holocaust on July 4th.
