The Kyrgyz flag is red with a yellow sun in the centre. Inside the sun is a stylized representation of the crown or tunduk of the traditional Kyrgyz yurt.
The sun represents light, infinite nobility and eternity. The red background most likely refers to the colour of the national hero, Manas the Noble, who united the 40 tribes of Kyrgyzstan. These tribes are represented by the 40 rays emanating from the sun symbol. The tunduk emphasises family life and the universe.
Kyrgystan Independence Day falls on August 31st when the flag is raised in remembrance of liberation from the USSR.
