The flag of Kiribati depicts a golden frigate bird flying over a sun rising from three wavy stripes, representing the Pacific Ocean.
The sun relates to Kiribati's location on the equator and the 17 rays of the sun also represent the 16 islands and Banaba (former Ocean Island). The sea symbology refers to the three islands groups (Gilbert, Phoenix and Line Islands) and the 4000km expanse of ocean that this island nation covers. The bird is a reference to freedom and command of the ocean.
The I-Kiribati celebrate their liberation from Britain on Independence Day on July 12th, with festivities and much flag flying.
