The flag of the Kenyan people has been used since independence from England in 1963. It is based on the flag of the KANU (Kenya African National Union) party who led the fight for Kenyan freedom.
The black stripe symbolises black majority, the red for the blood shed during the struggle for freedom, and the green for natural wealth. The white fimbriation was added later and symbolises peace. The central image of the flag is the traditional Maasai shield and two spears, which relates to the defense of all the things mentioned above.
The Kenyan flag is most often seen on National Day (December 12th) and at sporting events, most notably in the 3000m steeplechase.
