Kazakhstan

The flag of Kazakhstan was adopted in 1992, replacing the flag of the Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic. It shows a sun and eagle on a light blue base, with a webbed pattern in gold on the left.

The pattern represents the art and cultural traditions of the old Khanate and the Kazakh people. The light blue represents the various Turkic peoples that make up the present-day population of the country (Kazakhs, Tatars, Mongols, Uyghurs and others). Among these people the blue also represents the sky god Tengri. The sun is an emblem of energy and wealth and the eagle refers to independence and flight to the future.

The Kazakhstanis proudly fly the flag on October 25th, their Independence Day, to celebrate liberation from the former Soviet Union.
