The flag of the Isle of Man shows a red base with a "triskelion" (the symbol of the Isle of Man and also Sicily). It is known as the "Three Legs of Mann". This emblem features three running legs, bent at the knee and conjoined at the centre. A triskelion is one of man's oldest emblems, dating back to prehistoric times and with strong links to Celtic tradition.
Although still part of Britain, local residents of the Isle of Man explain that the legs on the flag turn anti-clockwise so that they don't kneel to the British!
The motto of the Isle of Man, which often accompanies the coat of arms, reads in Latin "Quocunque jeceris stabit", which means, "wherever you throw, it will stand", referring to the triskelion. The flag takes pride of place on July 5th (Tynwald Day).
