The flag of Ireland is another based on the French tricolour, but this time using the colours of green, white and orange. The green is thought to represent the Gaelic tradition, the orange relates to supporters of William of Orange and the white refers to the truce between them.
Although introduced in 1848, it was not until the Easter Rising of 1916 that it came to symbolise the Irish nation. It survived through the Northern Ireland/Irish Free State split to become the flag of the Republic of Ireland in 1949.
The flag is widely and proudly displayed in Ireland and around the world at various Irish Centres and bars. St Patrick's Day on March 17th is the prime occasion for unfurling the Irish Tricolour and hoisting it up the flagpole.
