The Indian flag was adopted in 1947 following independence from English rule. Widely known in India as the Tiranga, it has three bands of colour with the Ashoka Chakra, a 24-spoked wheel representing the wheel of righteousness, in the centre.
Until 2002 it could not be displayed publicly except on national holidays, but this rule was overturned. However, there are a great number of rules still remaining concerning how it should be displayed in different situations and it is held in high respect by the Indian people.
Republic Day on January 26th and Independence Day on August 15th are the two biggest days for flag-hoisting.
