The Greek flag represents the nation of Greece and has 9 stripes of blue and white and a cross in the top left. The latter relates to Greek Christian Orthodoxy and the stripes to the 9 syllables of the national phrase "Eleutheria e Thanatos" meaning "Freedom or Death". They may also symbolise the 9 Muses, the goddesses of art and civilization.
The blue and white colours refer to the sky, sea, waves and clouds and also to traditional dress. Although the basic design has remained in use for a number of years, the shade of blue has never been formally established and can vary from light to dark.
The Greek flag is often flown from public buildings and ships and especially on March 25th (Independence Day).
