The flag of Finland is a typical Nordic design, with the blue cross referring to the Finnish lakes and the white to the snow that often covers the land. The original was adopted in 1918 following independence from Russian occupation.
Various variations of the flag, including one with the Coat of Arms, are flown at a number of state, military and religious sites. Particular days requiring the flag to be hoisted are Midsummer Day, Mothers Days and Independence Day on December 6th.
There are official laws requiring the Finnish flag to be clean, undamaged and not defaced. If it is cleaned it must be dried indoors too!
