The flag of the Faroe Islands is called Merkið which means "the banner" or "the mark". It resembles the flags of neighbouring Norway and Iceland and uses the Scandanavian Cross.
The white base represents the pure sky as well as the foam of the waves breaking against the coast. The red and blue stripes are both colors found in traditional Faroese headdress.
In popular culture, the flag of the Faroe Islands is featured on the uniforms of those who appear in the video in the music video for singer Björk's song Declare Independence.
