The Chinese flag is officially known as The Flag of the People's Republic of China and informally as the "Five-Stars-Red-Flag". Is was unveiled in 1949 by Mao Zedong in Tiananmen Square from 38 finalist designs.
The red is a representation of the revolution and the blood of the people who died for it and the gold colour a symbol of the bright future of communism. Both colours were inspired by the Soviet flag. The main star signifies the leadership of the Communist Party and the four smaller stars the classes of the Chinese people.
The Chinese flag is widely displayed around the country generally and highly respected by the Chinese people, with any defacement of it being very taboo. It features particularly on National Day on October 1st and during Chinese New Year across the world.
