The flag of Belize (British Honduras) was first officially hoisted on 21st September 1981. The main area of the flag is blue, with red stripes at the top and bottom. These colours are designed to represent the opposition parties. In the centre of the Belize flag there are 50 leaves in a wreath, which symbolises the year 1950, when the independent movement first began. The Belizean flag also has a detail of two woodcutters, denoting racial diversity.
The flag is widely displayed on September 21st to celebrate Belize gaining independence from Britain in 1981.
