The national flag of Angola was adopted in November 1975. The flag is split horizontally into a lower black section, and an upper red section.
The red of the Angolan flag represents the blood that was spilt by the Angolans during their struggle for independence and the black relates to the continent of Africa. The symbol of the cog wheel is said to represent the workers and the industry, whereas the machete represents peasantry.
The Angolan national flag is flown at many sporting events and government buildings.
