Algeria's flag was first adopted on July 3, 1962. The flag was a sign of Algeria becoming independent of France.
The flag of Algeria is made up of two vertical bands of green and white, green being the colour closest to the flagpole. The centre of the flag contains a red crescent moon, with a smaller star inside the crescent. The crescent, star, and the green background are all traditional signs of Islam, which is the official religion of Algeria.
The national holiday of Algeria (Revolution Day), celebrated on November 1st, has Algerians across the country raising the Algerian flag as a mark of respect.
